There are currently two methods of hair restoration that are commonly used and widely regarded as the best methods available. With both of these methods, the basic concept is the same: healthy follicles, which are genetically resistive to balding, are harvested from selected areas of the scalp. They are usually taken from the sides and back of the head. The area where the healthy follicles are taken from is called the "donor site". These healthy follicles are then methodically transplanted into the area of hair loss, called the "recipient site". The primary difference between these two popular techniques is the method by which healthy follicles are extracted or harvested.
Follicular Unit Transplantation
The older and more widely known of the two methods is called follicular unit transplantation or FUT. In this method, a linear incision is made along the back of the head to remove a thin strip of scalp. This strip is then dissected under a microscope to harvest the healthy follicles and prepare them for transplantation into the recipient site. This method is also sometimes referred to as follicular unit grafting (FUG) or more casually, "the strip method" of hair restoration.
After the donor strip is removed, the incision is carefully sutured closed, using advanced techniques that ensure the area heals with a only a very fine scar that is virtually undetectable once the surrounding hair grows out.

PRP for Hair Loss
PRP, or “platelet-rich plasma,” is a non-surgical treatment for hair loss. It contains powerful, natural proteins and has been found to be an effective method to naturally stimulate hair growth. In some cases, the treatment is used in combination with other hair restoration processes, including transplants, micro-needling, or the use of various hair-growth stimulating medications.
PRP hair loss treatment is incredibly versatile, making it an ideal treatment option for male pattern hair loss, female pattern hair loss and even facial hair loss on beards or eyebrows.
PRP can be employed to treat a range of conditions, including:
- Genetic hair loss: Thinning hair.
- Alopecia Areata: Small round patches of missing hair, or complete hair loss.
- Telogen Effluvium: Hair follicle stops producing hair.
Not all patients will be candidates for a PRP treatment, but results appear in about 50 percent of cases. Many people choose this treatment, particularly if surgical hair replacement is not an option, such as crown hair loss in young men or patients that cannot be administered various hair-growth medications.
How Does PRP for Hair Loss Work?
Each session takes in the range of 45 minutes to an hour and involves several steps. The first step is extracting blood from the patient. The harvested blood is then processed to produce the platelet-rich plasma. The patient’s scalp is numbed with local anesthetic, and the PRP is injected into the scalp.
Arthrex Angel System & PRP for Hair Loss
Utilizing the highest possible concentrations of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is vital to natural, successful non-surgical hair restoration in Toronto. For this reason, we employ the most advanced technology available to prepare customized PRP hair loss treatments in the highest concentrations on the market: the Arthrex Angel System. This system is truly a next-generation breakthrough that ensures the powerful, natural proteins your scalp needs to stimulate rich, natural hair growth is delivered in abundance. What sets the Arthrex Angel System PRP formulations apart is the technology. It utilizes a proprietary platelet sensor and sophisticated automation to deliver high-yield and consistent results. We believe in effective results and in helping you realize your hair restoration goals.
Follicular Unit Extraction
The second commonly used method is known as follicular unit extraction or FUE. This technique is somewhat newer but has been proven extremely effective and has been growing in popularity as a result of the significant advantages it provides. FUE does not require any incision or removal of scalp tissue. In contrast to the strip method, follicles are extracted with a very small micro punch that enables the surgeon to harvest one follicle at a time and at random.
The harvested grafts are the same as those produced in the strip method, each one composed of a single hair follicle containing natural groupings of one to four individual hairs.
To perform a FUE hair transplant, your hair will need to be trimmed to 1 mm to allow for the harvest of the hair follicles. Using a power-assisted technique, your hair follicles will be harvested by hand, one-by-one. This is the key to Dr. Asaria’s FUE hair transplant in Toronto. In contrast to the Neograft method (an automated graft harvesting system) the manually extracted grafts are handled with extreme care and there is minimal trauma to the hair follicles. This greatly improves the survival rate of the newly transplanted grafts.
Dr. Asaria believes in taking his time to get the best results possible. That's why he dedicates himself to performing only one hair transplantation surgery per day.
